Johnny Cupcakes

Johnny Cupcakes, Inc
a clothing brand that has been active since 2001. The cupcake logo is the clothing lines feature , they incorporate different icons and symbols with the cupcake to make it more individual , in this case a skull and crossbones. The brand's insignia is a skull and crossbones, with a cupcake silhouette replacing the skull.
The Johnny Cupcakes line includes t-shirts, shorts, jumpers, jewelry, undergarments, and pins. Johnny now has stores and boutiques in Boston,Massachusetts and Los Angeles, California, with another shop in Hull, Massachusetts and another opening London's Carnaby Street.
I visited the store in London last week , the interior of the shop was themed like a bakery..

The t-shirts were displayed behind a glass counter at the front of the store
The design's on the t-shirts seemed to be themed , they were eye catching and the use of fonts were varied e.g old english fonts and modern bold.
The theme of cupcakes was used with a twist of a grimey rock and roll design style.

There was an interesting large mechanism at the front of the shop where a ball was flung, span and rolled around metal bars , it definitely gave the store a quirky difference and generated alot of interest on the busy Carnaby street...

The display shelves were simply boxes but looked great..

Flourescent yellow boxes full of bits and bobs , perfect for small gifts..

Festive johnny cupcakes decorations..

Packaging for boxer shorts....

Also vintage style wall art , making famous vintage trademarks his own ...

Jack Wills

Another Magazine that i always love for the layout and style is the  Jack Wills catalogue. The fun, abstract and quirky type and photography suit the brand really well as its audience is young students. The interior design of the shop itself is also something that i am a massive fan of. The style of the brand as a whole really influences me as a person , the way i dress and act, my room, the places i go and in the way that i work.
Interior and window design of retail shops is something that i would potentially like to go into, I like the idea of my graphics style being almost brought to life , and having my work represent a fashion brands  style as  a whole.

 A 2009 Catalogue... NICE TYPE

Blurring the Lines Between Graphic Design and Fashion

On my conquest in finding out where me and my graphics's style can fit into the fashion industry i discovered quite an interesting article on What a Fashion-Minded Graphic Designer is to Do? by a fashion school review columnist , Jessica Santina.

I read that Numerous graphic design jobs can be found within the fashion industry like being involved in the development of fashion advertising ,catalogues or developing graphic artwork that will eventually make its way onto graphic T-shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, or jackets. I also discovered that i could possibly find work designing jewelry or accessories--creating shapes and interesting designs that might translate into wearable art.
But what would benefit me most is jobs where i may be in charge of creating publicity layouts, which may eventually wind up in newspapers or magazines Or i could be asked to design packaging or collateral materials--things like brochures, letterhead, logos, annual reports--for fashion design companies or apparel manufacturers.

This has made me feel a whole lot better and given me more of an insight in what to look for during my PPD tasks.

STYLE MAG COVERS

Style mag

Style Magazine is used not only for fashion and clothing, but for promotion of fashion icons , in this case Emma Watson. Here is being featured in the magazine's December issue of 2008, promoting her new film 'The Tale of Despereaux'. She began to be an icon in the fashion industry as the public watched her mature into a lady through the Infamous Harry potter films. Her audience changed and she began to model and represent big fashion brands such as Burberry.

The font and layout of her article and cover suits her style , feminine , light and classy fonts and colours have been used to reflect the actor/model as a person and her role in the fashion industry.

I like the tall and slender style of the pages , the shoot and layout go well together , and at the same time suit Emma's style and Role.
Again , Editorial Design is defiantly something i would like to go into , especially in the fashion industry. Even in this well designed article , i can see improvements and special features that i would like to add or improve.

Another Example of a Fashion Icon featuring on the cover and contact , Kate Moss...

Again the Design of the article and cover really captures and reflects Kate's style and personality.
-Sexy
-Rock and Roll
-Unique

A little more direction

I have been thinking about editorial design in the fashion industry. I am a very keen reader of fashion mags and always like to appreciate the design , layout and style of the magazines cover and content. It is usually the colour and uniqueness in the design of certain articles within the magazines which persuade me into purchasing it.
The fashion industry has always interested me and even before this course i have thought about how i could change and make the graphic's side of it that bit more interesting.
Photography and colour is a key factor in the promotion and editorial side of the fashion industry and i would love to work with those two factors in addition with my skills in type, layout and print. I don't mean to blow my own trumpet but together i think potentially some amazing things could happen.

Style magazine is one of my favourite fashion magazines. Although it is free with the times i always buy the newspaper so i can have gander at its amazing photography , vibrance and layout.
They often have different graphic designers and illustrators changing the style and design of certain articles to make each magazine unique and interesting, One week i noticed a previous student at Leeds College of Art had worked on an article's font , Si Scott , a very talented illustrator with a quirky style , his individuality suited the articles criteria and gave it a special feature. This is what i potentially want to achieve in the fashion industry , to contribute my unique design style to fashion ad's and articles.
Getting involved with Style magazine would be a great way of getting yourself out there as an open designer in terms of audience as it is sold with a weekly newspaper , The Sunday Times, a family newspaper for the weekend.

Enterprise TASK 4

Who else is out there - how good are they?

The Fashion industry a very fast moving and constantly changing place. The industry relys on modern and unique design ideas for branding and promotion that requires constant reinvention. Fashion in When designing for fashion you must represent the main style and purpose of the brand and at the same time push boundaries and expectations of it. This is Often seen as a showcase for many of design studios most inventive work.

'the seasonal nature of the end product provides a limitless testing ground for new ideas and innovative production solutions'

As my interests lie within Fashion and Retail  i have researched into various practitioners withing that industry. I have chose to focus on designers that have been involved in the digital and print aspects of promotion and advertisement for various company's and brands.
Ollie cunningham is a young graphic designer currently working on promotional material for Burton Menswear and web designs at Arcadia Group Ltd for Burton Menswear.

Concluding Ollie...

As He has worked with a brand that i would die to design for , i am keen to know just how he got noticed and involved with it 'Jack wills university outfitters'.
He offers a wide range of skills in graphic design , mostly in digital and identity. As most of his experience has been in retail this has given him a great understanding of what the retail industry want from designers today. His work has changed dramatically since graduating , i suspect this is from sheer experience which he has used to teach himself about what the wide world of the design industry wants.
And from this i have learnt that, although i might think i know what the fashion and retail industry want from me, i do not! Until i have widened my knowledge on what is actually out there by exploring it myself and getting myself noticed by the right people , i will fail. By doing this i need to get my act together and start to apply for placements in places that interest me.
However i do have an eye for designing for fashion and retail for certain companies, and although Ollie may have more experience than me in the industry that i want to go in , i have skills in motion graphics and layout which he docent , so after gaining experience and scratching up on knowledge about the industry , i may have lost a rival.

MOO

Now i have started to think about business card designs to promote myself as a Graphic designer , i also need to think about appropriate printing methods for them so i can print in bulk for a sufficient price.
We were told about MOO printing in one of our PPD sessions with jon.
I had a nosey and found out that i can print 50 cards for £10.99!!
Perfect.
i will most definitely be using Moo for my first prints.
The quality seems pretty good too.....

Graphic design for fashion

This book is going on my Christmas list!
‘Graphic Design for Fashion’

The book would really benefit me as a design in terms of my practise and view on the industry.
The book is designed to bring together graphics and fashion to suit today's contemporary style,
It includes interviews and projects on fashion, photography and graphic design today.
An influencing book! , Not to mention the fresh design layout , colour and type of the cover and content.
