ENTERPRISE TAKS 1

Who am I - Who are they?

The question in the title remains!  As a second year graphic design student i am sill unsure which part of the industry i would like to head towards and specialise in. However the enterprise lectures, talks and tasks are helping me become much more knowledgeable about the design world and helping me find myself as a specialist graphic designer.
One thing i am sure about is my enthusiasm towards colour , image and photography and applying this to brands in the fashion and extreme sporting industry.

With this in mind , i don't see the harm in looking into 'possible' directions for the future. After doing this , i have a very vague idea of the areas that i would like to explore...

Fashion
Retail
Digital
Web design
print
Editorial
Publishing
identity
Branding
Photography

Unlike allot of the Graphic designers in my class  i work very spur of the moment and tend to dive straight into my ideas without thinking enough into the business aspect of it,  contextual and conceptual side of it. This is an area i definitely need to work on, the quality in my ideas tend to weight over my final outcomes , although it is in my style and personality to be bold and confident , this needs to be applied to my knowledge in the business side,  technically and contextually.
The skills in my practice are limited and i feel that with some drive and determination through the year i will defiantly improve on this.
I know that i have the potential and ideas for some great work , and broadening my knowledge and experience with different printing processes and techniques i can make the work a reality which in turn will give me a clearer direction into who i am as a Graphic designer, this will also improve on my portfolio for future job opportunities.

THE FOUR P'S

Promotion and place- i am interested in branding and identity , the thought of me re-newing or improving the brand visually really excites me. Graphically designing new ideas for clothing and extreme sports projects is always on my mind and i would love to apply my ideas into this industry. Brands such as Rome Snowboards , Insight and Roxy are all businesses that interest me, my style and eye for design suits their way of working in the areas of t-shirt design, web design , board design, accessories and promotion.

Generating a greater knowledge within businesses such as management and marketing is very important! I will now start to look into the businesses which interest me in a much larger context. Looking at them as a whole , their inspirations and history as oppose to just their designs will hopefully give me a greater chance in merging into their industry.
I will document and annotate my processes in doing this, also showing on my ppd blog how the brands have influenced certain areas in my work.

VISITING PROFESSIONALS

CATALOGUE GRAPHIC DESIGN CAME TO VISIT

We recently had a visit from two previous students that studied on LCAD's GD course like me.Tom Pratt and Oliver Shaw have combined their skills and come together to set up their own graphic design office they have mysteriously named 'Catalogue-'.  They specialise in design for print, branding, books , exhibition web and t-shirt's. They also have a second independant company called Printshop, which sells screen printed T-shirts, posters, bags etc.

Being introduced to the two was both comical and influential, they certainly knew what they wanted and how to get it by simply putting themselves out there and independantly making buisness decisions. They described to us their journey through graphic design and how theyve ended up where they are today, including all the mistakes along the way.
I found thir advice very influential and it made me think about my future in a different way, pushing yourself and having no limits is what you need to do.

It was refreshing to hear about the success and position of a young graphic designer who has benefited from the exact same course I am on now.

END OF MODULE SELF - EVALUATION

END OF MODULE SELF - EVALUATION

WHAT SKILLS HAVE YOU DEVELOPED THROUGH THIS MODULE AND HOW EFFECTIVELY DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE APPLIED THEM?

I feel my skills have definitely improved and developed throughout this brief, at the start my drawing skills were challenged and I benefited tremendously from this. Being pushed into illustrating my designs before digitally designing them made me realise the importance of the development with illustration and my skills within in it; which I had ultimately forgotten about since starting this course last year. In conclusion I therefore found my final outcomes were much better when explored through drawing them first.

WHAT APPROACHES TO/METHODS OF DESIGN PRODUCTION HAVE YOU DEVELOPED AND HAVE HAVE THEY INFORMED YOUR DESIGN DEVELOPMENT PROCESS?

FOIL BLOCKING  - Opened my eyes to more techniques in printing processes and special finishing.
DESIGNING FOR PRINT -  My final products were much more accurate and clean cut.
KERNING - I have become much more knowledgeable about how to place words onto paper and spacings between them, which in turn makes designs with type much more readable and easy on the eye.

WHAT STRENGTHS CAN YOU IDENTIFY IN YOUR WORK AND HOW WILL YOU ADDRESS THESE IN THE FUTURE?

My work has become much more precise and clean cut. I now think more about the processes and considerations behind my designs as oppose to just getting carried away with the software than what it looks like. I have without doubt benefitted from the print work shops and sessions with lorenzo. At first I was slightly confused and baffled by all of the processes and considerations but the tasks kept my brain ticking and thinking more about the important information.
I did not look at the printing tips manual task as a brief , but as a personal journal. Making notes which made sense to me about print considerations, this will become extremely helpful to me throughout my time in the GD world.

WHAT WEAKNESSES CAN YOU IDENTIFY IN YOUR WORK AND HOW WILL YOU ADDRESS THESE IN THE FUTURE.

There was defiantly a lack of printing processes throughout my project.
I defiantly need to explore different materials, stocks and printing processes when designing for print.
I can also improve on my pantone matching whilst designing for print, I have realised I could widen my knowledge in this area.
Keeping up to date with tasks and managing my time more efficiently, NOT LEAVING THINGS UNTIL THE NIGHT BEFORE.

IDENTIFY FIVE THINGS THAT YOU WILL DO DIFFERENTLY NEXT TIME AND WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO GAIN FROM DOING THESE?

Think deeper into my concept - gathering a broader range of research will enable the outcome to make alot more sense, whilst making it easier to evaluate you're journey through the brief.
Prepare myself - make sure I have all the right materials and time for my proposals, this will allow me to show my true potential.
Push the Deliverables - anything is possible if you put in the time and effort; believe in myself!!
Use the facilities - the college has amazing printing processes and facilities, I need to start using them e.g litho printing, screen printing etc.
Make full use of the available studio time - staying later in college makes me work harder as I am alot more focused; ultimately meaning I get alot more done in the time I am there.

Final Rationale

FINAL RATIONALE

I INTEND TO PERSUADE AND INFORM THE COASTAL FAMILIES OF ABERSOCH IN WALES TO SURF AND TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THEIR OCEANIC SURROUNDINGS.
IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THIS I HAVE PROPOSED TO CREATE AN EVENT THAT WOULD TAKE PLACE ON ABERSOCH’S MAIN BEACH IN THE SUMMER OF 2011.
THE EVENT WOULD BE FREE SURFING LESSONS TO ANYBODY AND EVERYBODY WHO IS KEEN TO TRY IT OUT BUT HAS HAD NO MOTIVATION OR OPPORTUNITY BEFORE.
THE EVENT WOULD BE ADVERTISED AROUND ABERSOCH ON POSTERS AND AN AEROPLANE BANNER WEEKS BEFORE THE EVENT EVERYDAY LEADING UP TO IT.

MY PRODUCT TO PERSUADE AND INFORM MY AUDIENCE ABOUT SURFING IN ABERSOCH IS A SURFERS PACK.
THE PACK INCLUDES AN INFORMATION BOOKLET INCLUDING
*A-Z TERMINOLOGY OF THE SURFING LANGUAGE AND LINGO
*SURFBOARD WAX - A SPECIAL KIND OF GRIP USED ON BOARDS - ESSENTIAL FOR SURFING, ESPECIALLY FOR STARTERS
*GROOVY STICKERS , COMMONLY USED BY KEEN SURFERS FOR DECORATING THEIR BOARDS/CARS OR VANS.

MY PRODUCT AND BRAND WOULD BE ADVERTISED DURING AND AFTER THE EVENT.
HOPEFULLY THE EVENT WOULD PERSUADE PEOPLE INTO BUYING MY PRODUCT AND WORD OF MOUTH WOULD GENERATE INTEREST. A SERIES OF POSTERS AND 3D MINI LEAFLETS TO BE PLACED IN SURFING SHOPS/OFF LICENCES AND CAFES AROUND THE TOWN WOULD HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT WHERE TO BUY/HOW MUCH AND ITS BENEFICIALS.

Finished product

MY SURFERS PACK WITH ADVERTISEMENT POSTERS AND LEAFLETS.

The finished product , i am happy with the overall outcome, however i definitely feel that i could have explored more printing processes and stocks.
printing processes used.
Although i have explored a new printing process which i thoroughly enjoyed and used throughout my project, FOIL BLOCKING (used on my zine and poster)

Other printing processes used in this project
-Digital printing ( stickers in envelope and stickers on tin )
-Lazar Printing ( Posters & zine & leaflet )

I should have's and will do's next time...

-Die cut any books and posters to make it more precise and fresh
-Litho Print leaflets to give it that extra touch
-ScreenPrint so i can use the special coloures which i proposed to use that can not be printed in digital or Lazar.

Although it is not a printing process i spray painted a stencil of my logo so it would have a rusty effect

Defining my what is good with Lorrane...

We were set a task today....

write down

  • 5 PRINT FORMATS
  • 5 PRINT METHODS
  • 5 PRINT CONSIDERATIONS........
i found it hard to answer these questions as i have not yet fully looking into these considerations in detail....

As you can see i have one BIG WHOLE IN MY KNOWLEDGE.

I have realised that i now need to consider the formats and print choices instead of just the concept of my idea!!
Lorrae also told us that we should step back every now and again to review your concept or design and get someone else to take a look and question you re choices.

This really helps with spotting flaws in your work and how to improve on them!!
