intellectual Property (IP) REFERS TO CREATIONS OF OUR MINDS.

four basic types of intellectual property

*Patents -  Apply only to things that work in a new way , electronic , mechanical , soft wear , medicines , scientific. E.G The ring pull can , a computer box , a television screen , a phone cover  etc  - All the same but with their own uniqueness
Henry mill took our the first patent, for a typewriter in England.
Patent letaler - wipe clean leather created by Seth Boyden. E.g Patent leather came from this Term.

*Trademarks and Logos
-Trademarks can be very complex devises , very precises in terms of colour layout etc. - means the logo is UNDER INVESTIGATION , and after the logo has been verified it turns into…..
Pasted Graphic 1.tiff
Just like and L plate on a car 'Learner' before the P plate 'Passed'.

Comparing logos - the AUDI logo has their own typeface , logo and design.
However , Heinz Baked Beans has registered various typefaces and colours therefore no other bean company can use it.
Also the Guinness branding had their own branding plus the glass shape to go with it , this is so their brand is unique and recognisable and you always thing guinness when you see this shape of glass , for instance , seeing someone across the bar drinking Guinnes , you might not be able to see the logo but you can see the glass.

Registeres Designs -
e.g APPLE , ELISSE etc.
iPhone - registered trademark for Apple Inc. Various apps are still patent pending, .

JUST BECAUSE THEIR REGISTERED DESIGNS DOSNT NECCESARILY MEAN THEY ARE GOOD DESIGNS.

COPYWRIGHT - Art , Design,  litterature , music , animation , film and games - AUTOMATIC - DATE AND RECORD YOUR WORK!

Everyday Copywright

AN EXAMPLE STORY OF COPYWRIGHT
Shepard Fairey is well known for his prolific stickering and flyposting of his propaganda-style images. While we at CR are well aware of his ability to stick his images just about anywhere in any city, we're still surprised to see his the hot-off-the-press posters he's created in support of Senator Barack Obama...

The photograph taken from a photographer was then drawn by Shepard , he i still in court today.

Potential Work Spaces

It would be perfect for Paramount Collective as the layout, destination and space of the building ticks all boxes...

PARKING

The buisness unit is brand new and looks professional but affordable, It is right beneath the railway so it wouldnt be a problem for us to commute from home. It has fully glazed windows with double entrance doors which gives it that open feel we are looking for. Insode there is a mezzanine floor which would be amazing as our idea of an upstairs studio and downstairs retail shop being interlinked could be possible! There is also toilet and kitchen facilitys so it would be great if we were working long hours through the week. The property also includes internal security and shutters for closing hours which is such a bonus! We were also told there is parking spaces incase we intend to drive to work , or for potential customers parking.

Potential Work Spaces Research

Duke Street Hill
Creation of a 1,200 sqft Retail Unit
Space were appointed by a Southwark night club owner to produce indicative studies for a new retail unit at the entrance to London Bridge Station

With this building being in central London it would be perfect to get our business seen and generate interest on the busy street. We are looking for somewhere where we can have two floor that have open space's with floor to ceiling windows to make our workspace feel spacious and bright. The large windows are also for passers by, giving the public a clear view of the shop and studio will hopefully encourage more customers.
With it being in central London it would obviously be far too expensive for us , especially for our first studio! But this kind of building is certainly what we are looking for so.  However this property could be a potential studio/shop depending on how successful our business develops throughout our first few years of getting it started and out there.

Enterprise Task 5

10 short but informative statements that identify my distinctive ‘positioning’ as a Graphic Designer...

  1. Over the past ten weeks i have come to the conclusion that i want to design for the fashion and retail industry.
  2. One ambition I have within the fashion industry would be to get involved in some way within the editorial design of fashion magazines and articles. During my primary and secondary research that i conducted on fashion magazines, the main one being Style Magazine, i was inspired and impressed by the visuals with the content of the mag.
  3. In order to pursue this ambition i am going to become more knowledgeable about layout and the theory behind it , so i am going to teach myself further about using InDesign.
  4. I am going to contact potential clients in order to get some feedback and advice when working in the industry or their company.
  5. I am also going to apply for some work experience or placements in order to give myself a taste of the real design world, preferablly in the fashion and retail industry.
  6. Web and digital design is something else that i have decided to look into. Websites for promotion of fashion companies and online stores is something that i would like to design.
  7. I am going to also set up an individual website or blog separate to this blog in order to promote myself and get myself out there as a designer. The website/blog will be an online professional , organised portfolio about what i am interested in , perspific pieces of my own work, inspiration and aspirations.
  8. Branding and identity is another ambition of mine, i am interested in re-branding certain companies that i have been researching , i feel that i have a lot of visual ideas within fashion branding and identity.
  9. I am going to look further into interior design to see how i can fit it into my graphic design practice, throughout my research i have noticed that the interior of a clothing store often has the same theme to the web design and branding of it , i need to look into how the process of interior design related to graphic design.
  10. I am going to do the same with photography , image plays a key role in graphic design , and as i am passionate about photography i need to research into how it could fit in with my design practice and not just as a separate hobby. A good knowledge of  visual communication using photography will improve my work and lessen my competition.
  11. As a seporate goal that i am setting myself , i am going to become more familiar with type. If i am going to get involved with editorial design i need to become more knowledgeable on the fundamentals of creating typefaces and how they fit within an article.

PPD Task Two

What is industrial Experience?

1. What is Industrial experience?

  • The key aspect of industrial experience in my opinion is gaining experience and understanding about the politics within Graphic Design. Placements allow you to see the relationships and communication between clients and employees.  Which in turn improves you're understanding when dealing and communicating with potential clients and work ethic's in the industry.
  • Confidence is another key aspect of what Industrial experience can provide to me. This is a massive help to me as I have confidence issues with regards to presenting me work and getting my work concepts across. This confidence is developed by being placed in awkward and tough situations that you wouldn't usually choose to be in or experience unless working with big clients.
  • Another thing industrial experience can help with is developing clients and contacts. When on placement it is a massive opportunity to actually get your name out there by talking to designers and clients about what kind of Graphic Design I am interested in, and what area i wish to pursue my career within (i.e fashion branding and identity alongside print or digital). By meeting new people and gathering contact details when i finish my degree, it gives me an opportunity to get in touch with the correct clients that are right for me.
  • Also industrial experience can bring future opportunities by developing relationships with the employers of who i complete my industrial experience with. If I take the opportunity to not only impress them but show I can sit comfortably within their organisation, they may offer me future employment chances when finishing my degree; or even possibly offering some financial work prior to my graduation.
  • When on placement I will also be surrounded with people that have potential been in the industry for a number of years. This provides the opportunity to absorb as much of their knowledge and experience as possible. For example learning new and unknown techniques within print and digital, also tips and improvements within my previous projects and concepts.
What can you learn from industrial experience?

  • I can learn what is the appropriate and correct manner in which to approach clients and how to address them. There is also the terminology that will take i while to understand, certain graphics language may be used out in the industry that will take some getting used to.
  • By completing an industrial year i can also learn whether this is the type of work that i wish to go into full time and if its right for me i.e i might misinterpret the work ethic and style of a company before actually working for them.
  • another thing i may become more knowledgeable on is the time frame of set briefs and requirements, the limitation of time can effect the final outcome and i may not be used to the changing and unexpected deadline requirements in the real world. This will allow me to evaluate as to whether or not i can keep up with the workload given in the amount of time i have.

What form/format could industrial experience take?

  • Freelance - this is me sending my work off to individual designers or companies in the form of a creative CV or something to represent myself as a designer. Freelancing is good but at this current level it might not have the outcome that i would want as i have no experience or contacts as off yet. So in order to become a successful freelance designer i would have to gain some experience and research into freelancing, whilst also building a reputation.
  • Voluntary work - as it may sometimes be hard to gain paid experience i may have to look at doing some voluntary work within a company in order to gain some experience. This will still give me all the benefits of doing paid work experience however it will show my dedication to graphic design and look very good to potential employers that i have completed such work.
  • Placements - This can come in the form of paid work, I would have to apply for these positions to companies and compete with other post graduates. The benefit of these placements is that the companies may offer future opportunities of employment. Therefore it may be of my benefit to try and get some industrial experience through this method.
  • Individual Designers - I could shadow other individual designers to gather experience of how they operate and complete projects. This will give me an insight on how different designers work to how learning practitioners work. It will also allow me to improve my knowledge of how freelance designers go about getting clients and potential work.
  • Websites - i could put my work up onto social networking sites and blogs (Facebook and Flikr). This will allow a wider range of audience to have a look at my work and get myself out there more.

What areas of industry are you interested in?

  • Branding and Identity is something that i would potentially like to go into, particularly within the fashion and retail industry. Incorporating my design style into a brand that i am interested in would fulfil my ambitions within the industry , my dream is for a company or brand to use my graphics style to represent them as a whole.
  • Digital/ Web design - another thing that interests me is designing websites for brands and companies, again within fashion and retail. The Internet is constantly viewed by the public , if i could design a website for a big brand or company it would be awesome!
  • Interior design also interests me , although this is not to do with graphic design , i would like the shops interior to match the web , promotional and brochure design that i would have produced for the company or brand. I have elaborated my interest for this in one of my previous posts...LINK
  • Editorial design is also something that i am interested in, I am passionate about photography and would love to work with a photographer in editing the photos and maybe adding text to image. However i need to clean up on my skills within this area , layout and kerning is not one of my strong points. Editorial design within magazine , zine and leaflet design interests me , working with style magazine and articles within the magazine would be something that would excite me as a designer. I elaborated my interest within this on one of my previous posts ...LINK

What are your concerns about industrial experience?

  • I am slightly worried about how different the work requirements will be in the industry compared to the work i am requested to do now. Although my course is demanding , the work that is set in the industry could be challenging for me as i would not be familiar with certain requirements.

  • Another thing that concerns me is my portfolio. How do i produce the right portfolio for the clients or companies that i am interested in working with or for. Also producing a portfolio that reflects me as a designer, it will be hard to choose which pieces of work and projects to include. I need to impress and influence the viewers and feel i need help in achieving this.

  • The people that i will be working around could case a problem as some of them may be slightly patronising as they may have been within the industry for a number of years. In order to build good relations with the other designers they need to understand that i have no previous experience within the industry so many things may be new to me. Also some people may expect too much of me and may give me more than i can handle, this will mean that i could potential become stressed as i feel i will need to deliver all the work that they give me.  I will also be nervous to ask questions , what i may think are good questions maybe silly and unnecessary.

  • If i was to do freelance work then pricing is a big worry for me as i do not know the prices in which to charge a client for my time and work. This could potential lose me a client if i mistakenly priced the job to high or flip side lose a client if the price was too low as they may question my capability.

  • Working internationally is something that I am interested in, however would not know where to start when applying for jobs or taking the first steps in trying to do it. I find it a very daunting process the thought of moving the whole of my life abroad and the fact that I could potential be the other side of the world to my family and friends.

Matt Wisniewski

Student at Rochester Institute of Technology and web developer, Matt Wisniewski is a very talented image manipulator. This series of mixed media collages, part of his on-going projects, is just gorgeous!
Although he isn't a graphic designer by book , his work is a great inspiration to me.
Collage design is something that i am interested in and Matts style to me is perfect!
I can't find much information about Matt  , but i felt his work defiantly deserves a post on my blog!

Inspiration

Seeing others’ creative chaos is so exciting , i would love to work in an environment like this , where alot is going on and its not just people sitting on a mac. This is photographed in a London based design studio Oneighty Creative.

Business Card's

Here is a selection of business cards from last years third years , i collected a few that caught my eye at the end of year exhibition.
As i starting to think about designing one myself i though it would be a good idea to collect some inspiration first.
I seem to have chosen the more simplistic styles of cards with a clear and clean finish...

Dan Boome's business card is simplistic and minimalistic , the tiny typefaces chosen maybe slightly too small as i had to squint to see it, although it looks good , it could do with being a little more readable. I think that i would choose a boulder typeface...

The single patterned shape on the front of the card worked well with the blank background, and the shiny foil finish made it that bit more individual and noticeable.

Ben Bowsher's card is also clean cut but not so simplistic, the stripy background makes the card more intellectual and detailed. I loved the duck egg blue background with the silver foil finish on the typeface, his BB logo typeface worked really well with it being a tall thin font as it went with the slick style of it, maybe this says something about the designers work. I think it is a good idea to reflect the kind of designer you are in your'e business card so you attract the right clients.

Hannah Jackson is the next card. I like the organic texture of the card , and the fact that it is recycled would defiantly generate interest as it shows she has though about the stock carefully.
I think her logo is nice too, the pastle teal colour goes really well with the off white stock. And the typeface 'Lobster' looks nice and bold against the light colour of circle.

I also like the bold black and white business card by Alex Walter, i saw some of his work and his business card really captured his clean graphic style style of work. I like how the front is black on white and the back is white on black, simple but effective. I like the use of capitals on the contact info, it makes it readable.
