Business Cards :: PPD

Over the past couple of weeks i have started to think about who i am as a graphic designer and how i can apply this to my identity and self promotion.
As i am in the process of becoming a professional , before doing this i have to create a range of sources in order for my to get  myself out there be accessible and contactable.

I want to include a photographic method and portray that i am an image driven graphic designer , in order to do this i have to consider my image design on my promotion to be just as important as type.
In terms of a name for myself , i have gone for my initials, O.C , i will use these initials as a base for my identity and will be including this on business cards , Creative CV , pieces of work etc.
These are difficult letter to work with in terms of visuals , however i can use this to my advantage as i can show my skills in kerning and typography and use of fonts in general.
I want my identity to reflect my work ethic , style and personality which is image driven , clean cut , fashion inspired and positive.
i thought about my initials , and realised that they remind me too much of a programme which i used to watch , the OC.
I though if i am portraying myself as a graphic designer , people need to know that i am one , and a creative one at that.
So i decided to add Design onto the end of O.C.
Through this process i then changed the work to its title initial , D.
I am now working with O.C.D which is also the name of an illness obsession disorder,  ironic as i am quite obsessive and compulsive when it comes to my design.
I though i could expand on this and use its double meaning as a concept behind my identity.

I have started to work with ideas for business cards using this concept...

Orange -  One of my favourite colours to work with
OCD -  double meaning
Fold - Interactable and changeable
Grain - Textured look
Slick and considered feel (hopefully)
Potentially would be printed on a durable stock , preferably some sort of white embossed card.

Also to propose including some photography of leads , this is an image i found on the internet , but i am hoping to use my photography skills and take some of my now photographs as a back image under my name.
I like the look of including image onto business cards , it makes them stand out and appeal to the correct clients , image driven.

Vintage :: PPD

Today i found these old business cards for a gardener and tickets for what looks like a grand event held in Stockport in the bureau at my house.
I asked my dad where they came from as they were nothing to do with my family , he didn't really know , they were my Granddad's.
I thought id give them a blog because i found them quite nice visually!
I like the classic and simplistic look about them , especially the events cards.

Business Cards (Identity)

The thing i liked the most about these business cards was the stock , it was an off white embossed stock that was durable as they are quite old and still in good condition!
The information text was also sectioned into embossed rectangles which i also liked , as it gave the
card a little more detail and a nice feel when i ran my fingers over it. Without this added extra of a special finish , in my opinion the card would be less appealing!
I wasn't too keen on the typeface as it is a little too detailed and fancy for my liking , but in terms of design identity for a gardener , it is a perfect choice.

Events Cards (promotion)

I suppose that this would be the olden day version of todays events flyers that are busy and colourful.
In my opinion less is more when promoting an event.
It is to the point and tells you the information without distracting your eyes and brain to pointless information and images.
I chose to photograph the stained areas of the cards as i though it added to the effect of them being vintage.
I also like the font, a traditional and clear Times new Roman, one of my favored fonts.
When i found the cards they were in a pile , together they made up a gradient of white to cream , showing that the stock that they were on was once a crisp, white embossed card.
However the cards towards the top of the pile had faded into an off white , creamy colour , which i preferred as it added to the effect of the vintage look and complemented the typeface.

Another little element about the cards that i liked was that the ink on the cards had printed onto the back of each one , weather this was due to them being piled whilst still wet , or rubbed off over time I'm not quite sure , but what a beautiful disaster!

This is a folded poster in which Tien-min liao has used for his self promotion.
He has used his daily stuff to present myself e.g food , drinks , note pads , pens , materials , software and the list goes on. He has used his professional and precise presentational skills to present his detailed and fine quality style of working. He has arranged his items in an extremely neat what so that the work reflects his personality and work ethic! I love how he has pushed the boundaries of just creating a piece of print or digitally produced poster to present himself as a graphic designer.
