MAY NINTH | NORTHER QUARTER | MANCHESTER

MAY NINTH | NORTHER QUARTER | MANCHESTER

May ninth is a creatively led multidisciplinary design outfit based in the Northern Quarter, Manchester. their specialities include; graphic and web design, art direction, typography, image–making, photography and moving image. They work mainly in the service, art, culture, fashion, editorial and sport domains—with big clients, with small clients.

This studio would be perfect for me as i am extremely interesting in image making and like to edge towards fashion and retail, their studio looks pretty cool and has a small kitchen which is ideal for saving money on food expenses. I would love to work in the norther quarter as it is probably the most creative are in manchester, filled with quirky vintage stores and craft stores which is right up my street, this is also good for keeping inspired with visual ideas! There are also graphic fairs nearby which i often attend, i think working in an arty area is very important, i also live in greater manchester so it is easily accessible for me to travel to, great location near the station.

RAW | SALFORD | MANCHESTER

Based in Salford, Raw Design Studio’s purpose is to create and design ambitious and effective ideas that are used to engage people and communicate a client’s message. Work includes creating thought-provoking print designs, developing award-winning web sites, managing and implementing multichannel ad campaigns. Established in 2006, current clients include Liverpool Football Club, the NHS and Greater Manchester Police.

I really like the look of this studio, the open white space is very refreshing, bright and spacious. I like the look of the blank canvas walls and how one of the designers is writing ideas on them. Again the location is great as i want to work in and around manchester area, near to home. Again there is kitchen facilities which is a bonus, i think the layout of the studio is an important thing when in a working environment, the open door balcony look really nice, the studio looks very homelike.

Print & Pattern

So prior to this i have been cracking on with research into designers like me, who incorporate textiles and image to type.

I came across a website called Print & Pattern.
It is a UK based website that celebrates all aspects of printed surface pattern. They design a range of products from textiles, cards, gift wrap, stationery, wallpaper, tableware, books, illustration, and anything
that fits into patterns and motifs.
The website/online studio has been created by a lady who calls herself bowie, most of the design and products featured on the website is her own although other creatives can be posted too if Bowie approves it....

"
CAN I BE FEATURED ON PRINT & PATTERN ?
anyone can submit images for a possible mention or feature. but please bear in mind the print & pattern aesthetic. a glance through the pages will show you the sort of topics and styles covered.
images should be sent as jpegs no smaller than 500 pixels wide, and dont forget to attach your website details, and any relevent info. i get dozens of requests each day so dont panic if you get no reply - its just that i dont always have time to reply to each one personally. it doesnt mean that i dont like your work or that it wont be featured.

NO pdf files please

submissions can be sent to bowiestyle@hotmail.co.uk

ps. as editor of P+P i have to set a certain standard and you are also at the mercy of my taste.
for example i really dont like drawings of people, and i dont approve of cruelty to animals for example leather goods.

im really sorry but i can only except emails written in english.

"

I was thinking of e-mailing to ask for a posible visit or a chat until i saw this..

"i get tons of emails asking for advice on how to get into design work.
unfortunately i dont really have all the answers and simply dont have the time to advise everyone personally. but if you are a designer, student or graduate one thing i can probably do is give you a shout out here on print & pattern. providing your work fits the P+P quality standards and aesthetic. just email me to request a potential showcase"

I am going to e-mail Bowie sometime this summer to see if i can feature some work, this will hopefully get myself seen on and starting up on the internet, and once i have created a specific brand for myself i might possibly send over a creative cv of something that will stick in her mind, although she stated she didn't help designers trying to branch out, i though why not? The worse that can happen is i get ignored by her, so over the summer i will peruse this.

Love Igloo

As for most the summer i am in wales as my family has a holiday home there, i thought id look into what studios were in wales so that i could visit whilst on my jolly s....
I found Loveigloo which would be a perfect place for me to visit as their style seems to fit mine and they explore a wide range of areas in Graphics and Textiles.....

 Loveigloo is a creative studio based in Caernarfon, North Wales and Bristol. They work on varied projects
for both small owner managed companies and large multi-national businesses.
Their work is exhibited and sold arround the world from Palace Street, Caernarfon, to downtown Tokyo.

They base their practise around a varied range of media and areas of design such as...
* Branding & Identity
* Graphic Design
* Illustration
* Product Design
* Packaging Design
* Website Design & Build
* Copywriting
* Photography

But what interested me the most within this studio was they also produce their own range of
retail products which can be bought in various retailers or directly from their shop.
This interests me in terms of my desire for textiles and interior design.
Here are some tea towels photographed on the beach sold within the shop...

First Eleven Studio

The Designer & Creative Director

First eleven studio was founded by a woman called
Jenny Frean in 1986. Sensing the strength in teamwork and the excitement of building a versatile group of artists, she drew together designers with exceptional individual skills. The team's expertise covers the design of printed, woven and embroidered textiles for all aspects of interior furnishings and surfaces.

'In addition to her own designing, Jenny's role is to maintain the standard of the studio's collections, ensuring up-to-the-minute, carefully thought out and well-executed designs. Beautiful colour has always been First Eleven's trademark and each piece of work in the portfolio must be good enough for the client to clearly see its potential as a successful fabric.'

First eleven is based in west sussex which is quite far away from me but i am willing to travel and enjoy visiting new places!
This is another potential studio for me to contact as the textile designs seem to fit my style.

A new Me

Over the past month i have been delving into textiles , i have used a range of media such as photography, collage, illustration and use of digital software to create a repetitive organised floral pattern, i have been applying it to a range of objects for my proposed product.

{objects}

Textile design has always been something that i wanted to try properly, and now i have i love it!
This has given me alot of direction in terms of what kind of designer i am!
I have also been applying my textiles to considered typography, I have found my specific style finally.

{print machine}

I have figured that i am not a digital graphic designer as i haven't been completely happy sitting at a screen for the past year. I now realise that i can incorporate my skills in crafting, illustration and mixed media to the skills that i have learnt on this course.
